Restaurant
Foija competes for the title of the oldest functioning restaurant in Finland with Helsingin Kaivohuone and Kaisaniemi, all founded around the same time. The name of the restaurant comes from the French word “foyer” which refers to a greenroom.
When Turun Ruotsalainen Teatteri (The Swedish Theatre in Turku) was inaugurated on 21st January 1839 , three rooms and a kitchen in its downstairs were rented out for a restaurant – and that is how Foija’s eventful history began. The theatre restaurant has lived through tsarism, both world wars, prohibition, and the fire of the theatre building in 1881.
In its current form, Foija has operated in these premises for over 20 years. The latest full renovation was completed in the spring of 2004. The new unique and versatile menu, the delicious lunches on weekdays, the central location by the marketplace, the renovated premises and our investment in quality food and service offer both locals and tourists a nice restaurant experience to return to.
